Untitled (Bubblegum)’ (2010) © Dan Colen, Courtesy of Newport Street Gallery and Dan Colen Colen’s portrayal of contemporary America through his selection of witty and poignant works has been much talked about since his emergence onto the New York art scene in the early 2000s.
The Newport Street show, which spans fifteen years of Colen’s career, will feature early works such as the photorealist painting of the artist’s chest entitled “Me, Jesus and the Children” as well as new works which will include large-scale installations and paintings from Colen’s ‘Gum’ and ‘Trash’ series.
In the ‘Gum’ paintings, blobs of brightly coloured chewing gum are spread across much of the canvas, producing striking effects. The ‘Trash’ works incorporate discarded everyday objects, resulting in vibrant colourful scenes.
